Research and planning
In this section here In am researching and talking about different news values and what they mean. I am also talking about the codes and convection's of news items and to look at the different gene that are in certain news broadcast that are presented in the different news stories.
Here is my research for news value that I did giving an example of all the different type of news and the different types of news being reported. Me and my partner Thiago both research different types of news and what made it worthy of being put in the news; for example their are serious events that occur in the world and are generally the public either nationally, locally or even globally. However there are also trivial things that aren't reported such as a baby being born or a man stealing a car because that are things that happen very often in the UK.
We also looked at what makes an event valuable enough to be reported like why is it even presented on the news. In the last slide we talked about different news value such as Impact, proximity, human interest , prominence are all the things that are needed for an event to be on the news.
Around the world there are different types of news being reported, they are both called soft news and hard news.Soft news is essentially-involves human interest ,entertainment, education. This involves things like art, drama , health and TV shows. Hard news is news that involves very serious matter and is aimed at a specific audience that are interested in politics, economy, crime and law. If you see my slide about it you will see that I have used examples of hard news.
My own research on news value
Here is my own recording of Scottish local news that is about five minutes long and that I have analysed in the table above which shows all the different values that are all different in this news item. This makes it news as has different values and that make it a news item.
Where are we going to get our stories from
Some reporters often go out and look for news by themselves or it sometimes comes to them; For example it might come to them through the feedback from the audience or other times people write to them telling them about certain events then the reporter sees it as news.
Another way to get an interesting story is by going to your local community centre or a museum and seeing what type of news there is their. For example in a museum their might be some soft news which is focused on human interest such as finding a lost human skull that might see how humans looked like a million years ago.
There are other ways journalist that might help them in getting a good story in the news this can happen through certain contacts that they may have such in the police, hospitals and local transports. These type of places may provide useful news items because things are always happening constantly in these places such as Murder, car crashes, drug use etc. This way they provide lots of stories which a journalist can use in as and put it into in the newspaper or on TV.
One thing a reporter never stops doing is looking for a story, they need to look everywhere for a story because stories occur everywhere even when you least expect it to be: A reporter need to almost have a sixth sense about things when it comes to finding a story in the most unlikely of places one of them could come from strangers.
Hard stories can also come from unlikely and familiar places that may give an insight on to how society is doing and how to get some important news that relate to the economy and that is very important and affects everyone in this country. Here area list of things that journalist keep in contact with in order to get some news items
- Schools
- Universities
- professional people
- Business
- churches
- Non profit organisations
- Mosque
You can also get stories by talking to press officers who will discuss anything about their organisation and what they are doing there.
News: codes and convections
In this part of the blog I have talked about different news vales that two different local radio news items seen to have and how they have been done depending on the genre the news item present different kinds of code and convection of news depending of the genre. Here are some examples of me speaking in the news items but here is the step by step thing I did on audacity to get it.
Here steps that I used to make my voice recording on the codes and convection of new s
depending on it' genre, The final recording is on the bottom which I imported from sound cloud.
Listen to my analysis of codes and convections
As you can hear there is a background sound from the computer, unfortunately I couldn't edit this out so I just left it there. This had to be done with another person but I had to do this by myself as I had no one to partner with and they had already done their news items.
Audience research( Using secondary research)
By looking at Of-com I found out that the listeners with a DAB radio in their household had risen from 44% in 2013 to 48% in 2014
I also saw that a proportion of listeners with a digital platform( DAB, Online ,DTV) had been 37% last year but this year it had risen to 37% which is more than last year.
From doing secondary research at the radio centre I found out that radio stations such as Kiss FM and Smash hits reaches 6.1 million youngster every month and found out that 88% listeners had consumed music through radio in the last week compared to:
61% via I pod/ MP 3 Player
56% through TV music channels
46% through CD's
40% mobile phones
Audience research ( primary research)
For my primary research me and my group decided to ask to ask some of the public certain questions that involved we asked people in the local area these questions.
- Do you work or live in the area
- What do you vale about kilburn/Madia vale
- In what ways do you think the area could be improve
- How do you get your news do get it from, radio, social media, friends
- Do you have any other comments that you like to ask about?
Our first recording
The person that we asked is a teenager living in kilburn/Madia Vale we got her views by asking the four questions above it was very good to interview someone that is young and has specific views on what is going on the local area.
Second recording
Third recording
My experience today 31/10/14
My experience today is that me and Reece were tasked to go out and interview some people in Kilburn and we needed to get some information about the Flash festival that happened yesterday. We were going to talk about the event and how many people attended but unfortunately there was no- one there to ask the questions that were their the previous night.
The man that was there said that he wasn't at the the event and never actually saw how many people intended or how may people were expected to come.
We walked to West Hampstead to St James's church to ask about the Literary festival that is today about the author's event 'The ring ' we walked for a long while, but there when we got there that and we asked around inside the church , if anyone knew about the event that was going to happen today.
We did this first because we needed to ask any one in charge, but like before the people there knew about the event but they didn't know anything about the event in more detail as they only worked there and didn't really organise the event.
I was really upset as the people that were part of the festival from today and yesterday weren't there so we could interview them and ask any questions about these two events.
Comparing Digital News
Some Digtial news are very different compared to other certain news items in the world and some may have more hard news than other whereas some of them have all the news sticked into one such entertainment, soft news, hard news, politics etc,
Here are some of the news that I had and imported in my blog.
This news happens to be about an astronaut taking a picture with lovely dogs which I think is a form of soft news as it is considered as very sweet and is a form of soft news. It is on Buzz feed which have a lot of news items such as soft news, entertainment , Hard news, Videos etc. . They also have a form of travel and food, DIY and other things that don't just have to do with news
The daily News have more serious news and tend to stick with hard news more; unlike Buzz feed they are not bringing in various news items but are only discovering the important. The daily mails Gatekeeper(Editor) is the one in charge of which news to bring out to the public and unlike Buzz feed the editor for the daily mail has only chosen important topics and has not really chosen a lot of things from the entertainment sector.
Here you can see a crime story that Vice have put online that is based in America like Buzz-feed Vice is using other forms of news items that add an effect to the website so that people look at their website even more. This states a quote from Tony Gallegar whom is the deputy head of the Daily mail says that crime is not
Planning
The aim is to construct a five minute local radio news broadcast.
Production team
Sade Ogibuike
Reece Tavares
Randy Mankoto
Olamide Lanuhun
We worked on our script by putting it in order and by analysing the news item to see whether to see which one was important. Here is a version of our script that we did that we did as a group.
This was done in our editorial meeting that focused on our scripts as in the scripts that we first did as a group we made some minor mistakes. The whole reason for mooing this is because we wanted to look and be professional as we felt that it was important to correct our mistakes as Media correspondents in a local radio news.
*Working on the scripts
*Having a conversation about the scripts
For all my work we used we planned what application we were going to use ; we used different application such as:
Blogger is an application we used in order to our finish audio and text, we plan on using this all the time and it is a key thing that we are going to use.
Sound cloud is what was need as we had to upload all our tracks in order to place it on blogger as it is important for the examiner to look our work.
This one other useful tool that we will use as we need to upload all the information that is needed as we had to create sound on audacity through that was really important for our production work.
